According to the Spanish edition of the People's Daily Online, a protocol on Chilean adan's access to the Chinese market was recently signed in the Chilean capital, which will promote the export of Chilean almond in shell to China.

The agreement was signed on March 15 by Esteban Valenzuela, Chile's Minister of Agriculture, and Wang Lingjun, deputy director of China's General Administration of Customs, at the Ramoneda Palace, Chile's presidential palace. The signing ceremony was attended by Chilean President Gabriel Boric and Chilean Foreign Minister Alberto van Klaveren.

President Boric said at the ceremony that the signing of the protocol further expands the scope of Chilean exports to China and is good news for Chile's trade, agriculture and economy. During President Boric's visit to China in October 2023, an agreement on the export of almond to China was finalized. At the same time, the protocol on phytosanitary requirements for Chile's fresh stone fruit exports to China was signed, allowing Chile to export fresh peach and apricot to China. Chile became the first country in the world to have access to the Chinese market for all major categories of fresh fruit, and is also a major supplier of fresh fruit to the temperate climates of the Chinese market. He added: "We are exporting pears, prunes, blueberries, apples, cherries to China, and these products are loved and valued by the Chinese people. China is a huge market and presents many opportunities for us to continue to grow, and we are pleased to be making progress in this area."

According to official data for 2023, the area under cultivation of almond trees in Chile as a whole is 8724.2 hectares, mainly in the O'Higgins and Metropolitan regions of central Chile. According to the Chile Tree Nut Annual Report released by the US Department of Agriculture, production of Chilean batan in the 2023/24 season is expected to reach 11,400 tons, an increase of 0.88% over the 2022/23 season, and total exports will be 8,300 tons, an increase of 0.60% over the 2022/23 season. The main export markets for Chilean batan are neighboring Argentina and Ecuador, as well as Russia. After signing the agreement with China, the Chinese market is expected to significantly boost Chilean almond industry exports.

At present, China has become Chile's largest trading partner, largest source of imports, largest export destination and largest agricultural export market. According to statistics, in the 2022/23 production season, Chile exported more than 574,000 tons of fresh fruit to China, more than half of which are cherries. As of the 10th week of the 23/24 season, Chilean cherry exports to China increased further, reaching 377,000 tons
